Find Your Way in the Beauty of Cape Point

Cape Point is a wondrous natural beauty and a great place to find your way moving into 2020. It can be easy to get lost in all the busyness of our lives. With this in mind, it's important to take the time to reflect on what goals you have achieved in 2019, how you have grown and what you look to achieve in the next year. Growth is growth - taking all things into consideration. If we look at nature, similarly, nature takes on battles and successes yet continues to grow.

Why not immerse yourself in nature whilst you take the time to reflect?

Here’s what you can do in Cape Point to find your way:

Take a walk

Taking a walk is a great way to de-stress and reflect. Around Cape Point, in the heart of the Cape Point Nature Reserve (part of Table Mountain National Park), the Shipwreck Trails offer just that. Follow the clearly marked path from the Olifantsbos car park, winding through fragrant fynbos down to a pristine stretch of coastline. There, you'll discover the rusted hull of the SS Thomas T. Tucker, one of Cape Point’s most photographed shipwrecks, tied into a dramatic story of fog, wartime navigation, and the sea. Keep an eye open for wildlife. Chacma baboons are common here—curious, sometimes bold, but best admired from a safe distance—especially near car parks and picnic areas. You might also spot eland, bontebok, and Cape mountain zebra roaming through the fynbos and dunes. Birdlife is rich, too—think Cape sugarbirds and orange-breasted sunbirds among nearly 1,100 indigenous plant species. Find cool hikes and walks to do in around Cape Point.

Write at the Lighthouse

Writing helps process your thoughts. Why not take some time to sit by the lighthouse, take in the history and draw inspiration from the setting? Cape Point, at the tip of Africa, is home to two lighthouses that make for a scenic and inspiring place to pause and write. The old lighthouse, built in 1859 high on Da Gama Peak, was once vital to shipping but proved too often hidden in fog. Today, it no longer functions as a beacon but stands as a historic attraction, offering panoramic views over the Cape Peninsula and the surrounding flora and fauna.

You can reach the old lighthouse via the Flying Dutchman Funicular from the car park, an attraction in itself, and soak up the views before wandering to nearby highlights like the Two Oceans Restaurant or Buffels Bay. Few places in the world match this combination of history, nature, and scenery.

Visit Dias Beach

Walk along the beach and hear the sound of the ocean, the crashing of the waves and feel the sand between your toes. Dias beach is absolutely stunning and holds an untouched beauty. Surrounded by dramatic 200-meter-high cliffs, this secluded shoreline is framed by sweeping views of the Cape Peninsula. The pristine white sands and crisp Atlantic waters make this a rare spot for peaceful reflection—just you, the ocean, and the Cape’s raw, untouched beauty.

For some this may not be your ideal way of reflecting on the past year, but if this does stand true to you, then go forth and visit Cape Point.
